The Wisconsin Builders Association (WBA) has released new data indicating a nearly seven percent decline in new home construction starts from the first quarter of 2023 and year-to-date compared to 2022. The report, which includes information submitted by municipalities across the state, shows that 3,103 new home permits were issued statewide between April 1 and June 30. This figure is slightly more than 200 permits fewer than those pulled in the first quarter.

"Even despite the slight decrease from quarter one to quarter two, the industry is operating at or near capacity," stated WBA President Mike Howe. He attributed the continued high demand to low existing home inventory.

On a national level, single-family permits have decreased by nearly 21% compared to last year, with a specific decline of 19% in the Midwest region, according to recent figures from the National Association of Home Builders.

"We’re pleased that homebuilding is still strong across Wisconsin given the increased material costs, continued labor shortage, and high interest rates," commented WBA Executive Director Brad Boycks.

The Wisconsin Builders Association represents a network of local associations focused on supporting members in building communities throughout Wisconsin. The organization advocates for approximately 4,000 members within the home building industry to maintain affordable and accessible housing for families across the state.
