Marathon County has been chosen as the host for the 79th Alice in Dairyland Finals, scheduled for May 14-16, 2026, according to an announcement from the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP). The annual event will bring statewide attention to Marathon County’s agricultural industry and community.

Alice in Dairyland is a communications professional tasked with educating the public about Wisconsin agriculture. The selection process for this role occurs every May, with candidates undergoing a rigorous public interview process. Each year, a different county hosts the finals, offering an opportunity to highlight local agricultural achievements and businesses.

A planning committee for the 79th Alice in Dairyland Finals is seeking volunteers and donations from residents of Marathon County and nearby communities. Those interested are encouraged to contact the committee directly.

According to data from the University of Wisconsin–Madison Extension, Marathon County is home to over 2,200 farms, with family-owned operations making up 97% of that number. The county dedicates more than 473,000 acres to agriculture. The sector provides over 11,000 jobs locally and generates $2.8 billion in economic activity each year. Key products include ginseng—where Marathon County leads the state—dairy (ranking second in Wisconsin), and maple syrup production.

Sarah Hagenow, who holds the title of 78th Alice in Dairyland, will visit Marathon County on more than ten occasions ahead of the finals in 2026. Her scheduled appearances include events such as Colby Cheese Days, North Central Wisconsin Antique Steam and Gas Engine Show, Athens Fair, and visits to local agribusinesses like maple syrup farms and ginseng gardens. These visits are expected to draw additional attention to agritourism opportunities within Marathon County.

The final selection for the next Alice in Dairyland will take place on May 16, 2026, in Wausau. The process includes a three-day finals event each May and a two-day briefing event held several weeks prior. Activities during these events involve press conferences, tours of local agribusinesses, media interviews, and speeches by candidates. Some parts of the finale are open to the public and serve as opportunities for local businesses and products to be featured.

Alice in Dairyland serves as a full-time communications professional with DATCP for one year. The program receives support from various partner organizations including Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin; Ginseng Board of Wisconsin; Goodman's Jewelers; Kettle Moraine Mink Breeders Association; Dairy Innovation Hub; Wisconsin Beef Council; Wisconsin Corn Promotion Board; and Wisconsin Potato Promotions and Auxiliary.
